Lilac Fest opening with world record attempt

Rochester, N.Y. -- A sure sign of spring in Rochester has arrived: the Lilac Festival.

Organizers will kick off the 10-day event at Highland Park with an attempt to set a new world record by creating the worlds largest human flower.

They need more than 2,200 people to wear purple ponchos and stand in the shape of a lilac to achieve that goal.

Participants will give it a shot at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Highland Parks center stage.

The festival runs from 10:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. daily through May 18.
