Pickup truck hits moving freight train

Murray, N.Y. -- A train hauling fertilizer was hit by a pick-up truck in Orleans County Monday morning.

Police said Lee Sietmann, 24, of Brockport, was heading south on Hulberton Road in Murray when he crossed the railroad track and hit a moving freight train.

The impact spun the truck into a railroad crossing warning light pole and then back into the train a second time. Sietmann got out of the vehicle before it burst into flames.

He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The only two people on board the train were the engineer, Neal Keirn, 56, and the conductor, Lawrence Zablonski, 49. Neither man was hurt.

The train, operated by Genesee Valley Transportation Co., was carrying 130 tons of fertilizer.

Police were still investigating what led to the crash and charges against Sietmann were pending.
