New Wilmot Cancer Institute

by Jennifer Lee

Rochester, N.Y. - UR Medicine is expanding its network for cancer treatment and research.
On Thursday, the new Wilmot Cancer Institute was announced. It's a network for UR Medicine's clinical and research programs for cancer.

Doctors at UR Medicine have started a 30-million-dollar campaign to raise funds for cancer research.

The hospital says the institute will allow doctors to give more extensive care to cancer patients.

There are several satellite locations from Canandaigua to Batavia.

As for the $30 million, that will be used to create endowed professorships and research funds also to improve shared research infrastructure.

"I think the cancer center is a great opportunity for Rochester and other people who are in my situation," said Gerald Kressman, 80, who is a cancer survivor. "Every day when you get up, you feel a bit better and you get motivated to do things. I started working around the house and the yard, which I couldn't do before."

UR Medicine said the Wilmot Cancer Institute treats about 10,000 people each year.
