Praying for Penn Yan

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- Disaster relief was still underway Sunday after the devastating storms last week in Yates County.

Church members at the Penn Yan United Methodist Church prayed for a swift recovery during service.

It was a moment to reflect on the hardships the town is facing.

"I just could not believe it and especially that it could happen so fast," said Nancy Francis of Penn Yan. "Everything was fine, and just like that. I didn't realize how much power water has."

Th water was also destructive. Many homes have been condemned and businesses remained closed.

The church has turned to the power of faith. The congregation united in prayers for better days.

"It's all about each of us in Penn Yan engaging however we can in helping other people," said Ward Abbett, who gave the message in service.

He explained the importance of working with one another beyond this hardship.

"You would hope that it continues," said Abbett. "That people continue to help each other long after a catastrophe happens; that it's an ongoing practice with them."
