Bear in the suburbs

Rochester, N.Y. The Department of Environmental Conservation believes there is just one bear that has been spotted several times around Chili and Greece.

The DEC believes the bear is a yearling and because the bear is not causing a problem or being aggressive toward people, the DEC is going to leave the bear alone.

The only time we would go in and do anything about it is if it became a real problem and was making a habit of coming in raiding bird feeders, [or if it was] becoming aggressive toward people, not taking off when it sees people, and that sort of thing, DEC Regional Wildlife Manager Mike Wasilco said.

According to the DEC, the black bear population is on the rise.

In order to keep bears away, the DEC recommends locking up trash, clean and store grills after use and put away bird feeders.
