Assini wants lower speed limit

Gates, N.Y.--The speed limit sign on Buffalo Road near Adeane Drive reads 55 miles per hour, but neighbors say many travel faster than that.

On Saturday, a two-vehicle crash resulted in two people being transported to the hospital, though police say speed was not a factor. That said, an effort to drop the speed limit is underway.

"It's time to take a look again for the safety of the neighbors," said Mark Assini (R), Gates Town Supervisor.

At one time, Bob Reimer said this section of Buffalo Road was wide-open and the only accidents you would see involved deer. Now, there's a new development being built near it and the speed limit drops to 40 miles per hour closely.

"There's no reason people have to go 55 out here because we're going right into a pretty congested area," said Bob Riemer, a resident of Buffalo Road of 37 years.

Assini said he has reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation and Senator Joseph Robach (R-56th) regarding a speed limit change.

The D.O.T. did not return calls for comment.

In a statement, Robach had this to say:

"Certainly, I always work with local government and residents to try to deliver the best results for our community. This seems to be a sensible measure that will improve traffic and pedestrian safety; I'm more than happy to assist Supervisor Assini and support him in this effort."
