Arc of Yates struggling to rebuild

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- The cleanup from severe flooding in Yates County has proven more challenging than previously thought for some groups.

The Arc of Yates, which serves about 160 people with developmental disabilities, has more than $500,000 in damages, but it cant get any state aid because its a nonprofit organization and doesnt qualify for grants designed for businesses and homeowners.

Our true, full and complete services to families have certainly been compromised, said Katie Ring, the centers executive director. This is where we have to begin again.

The center has had to temporarily cut jobs and care programs. It could be a year before the center reopens.

Laurie Snyder, whose daughter has worked at the Arc for 25 years, said its been a major disruption for her and her friends.

She knows what it means to so many of her friends to not have this building to come to, Snyder said. I can't imagine how different all of our lives would be. This has been another extension of our family, this building and the services they provide.

The center is collecting donations through its website. For more information, click here.
