State police warn of donation scams

Binghamton, N.Y. -- The New York State Police issued a warning Saturday about potential scammers collecting donations for the family of fallen Trooper Christopher Skinner.

Skinner, 42, was killed in the line of duty Thursday after being hit by a car during a traffic stop.

The driver who hit Skinner, Almond Upton, 60, is charged with first-degree murder.

Police said the Skinner family is only endorsing two funds for donations: the Skinner Children Ed Fund, set up at Visions Federal Credit Union in order to save money for the education of the Skinner children, Kyle and Erin.

The other fund is the Signal 30 Fund that helps other families of the New York State Police.

Trooper Skinner served with the state police for 13 years.
