Schools benefit from Hobby Lobby settlement

Rochester, NY  -  The retail chain Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. has agreed to settle a lawsuit over deceptive advertising practices.

Hobby Lobby misled customers into thinking they were receiving steep discounts.

Hobby Lobby advertised its custom framing, furniture, and home decor products as sale items for more than 52 consecutive weeks.

"When companies mislead customers by advertising never-ending sales, our office will hold them accountable," said Attorney General Schneiderman. "Ultimately, a permanent sale is no sale at all."

Hobby Lobby will have to change its advertising, pay a fine and donate $138,000 in gift cards for 700 public schools in New York.

Five schools in Wayne County and 108 schools in Monroe County will receive gift cards.
