Man drowns in Erie Canal

Gates, N.Y. - Rescue crews recovered a body from the Erie Canal late Thursday afternoon. 

Crews were called to the canal near the Chili Avenue bridge around 4 p.m. Thursday for a report of someone in the water.

Gates Police confirm that a 21-year-old male was pulled from the water.

They say he with a group of five people and had jumped from an old bridge.

Police say the area is a common spot for kids to jump from but it is very dangerous.

The victim's name has not be released.

Police say thre are as many as four drownings in that spot every year.
