Old buildings are gems to community, but susceptible to fire

Canandaigua, N.Y. Historical buildings, hundreds of years old, are considered gems in communities such as Canandaigua. But for firefighters, they can mean a greater hazard when flames breakout.

19th century buildings are a symbol of the citys charm, but Canandaigua Fire Chief Mark Marentette said once ignited, a fire can spread rapidly.

Another obstacle with the old buildings is what firefighters describe as a maze.

They were all built differently and have been renovated since, making it potentially difficult to find the source of a fire.

The last time a building burnt to the ground in downtown Canandaigua was 1970.

In the video above, hear from retired firefighters Hap and Tom Bement, who were working the day of that large fire.
