9 Arrests in Medley Break-in

Irondequoit, N.Y. - Police charged nine young people with breaking into Medley Center Mall and causing damage by releasing fire extinguishers inside the mall.

Police said the teens, whose range in age from under 16 to 19, were caught thanks to an alert neighbor.

13 WHAM News spoke to that neighbor who did not want to be identified. Marie, who is 85, told us she got a bad feeling when she saw the large group of young people cut through a fence and head towards the mall with bags in their hands. She then called 911.

Mall Owners, Bersin Properties, credit that neighbor and police for catching the alleged vandals.

Mall owners said there has been more vandalism and break-ins that resulted in water damage and other safety concerns inside the near-vacant mall. Theyre hoping with police surveillance, better locks and alert neighbors that these episodes will end.

Police said this was no prank. They said the young people, some of whom attend high school in Irondequoit, are charged with two felonies.

They will return to court June 17.
