Woman jumps from moving car at mall

Victor, N.Y. -- One look at the burned out front end of the Chrysler Concorde and there's little doubt about the fire's intensity.

An Ontario County woman jumped out of her car after it caught fire in a parking lot at Eastview Mall Tuesday.

"The amount of smoke was tremdendous. The fire was almost out of hand," says Adam Belle-Isle, a witness. "The flames were coming out throughout the top of the car, through the wheel-wells; they were shooting underneath the vehicle."

"The whole engine compartment was burning and it was starting to work its way into the interior of the car," said Chief Andy Stromfield with the Fishers Fire Department.

Stromfield said the call came in as an empty vehicle.

Skid marks in the parking lot told a different story.

"She was driving the car and realized that there was something coming from under the hood, smoke of soms kind," said Stromfield. "When she went to stop the car, she didn't have any brakes. The pedal went all the way to the floor. So she chose to get out of the car."

Sarah Coon, 20, of Shortsville, bailed while the car was still moving. Authorities found her sitting on the pavement 40 yards away from the fire.

The forward progress of her car was stopped as it crashed into three parked and empty vehicles. A second car also caught fire.

"It just makes you realize that things can happen," said Belle-Isle. "Luckily, nothing happened that couldn't be fixed."

Coon was only scratched and bruised in the incident. She was cited for unsafe brakes.
