Thousands unite for Tour de Cure

Rochester, N.Y. - Thousands gathered at Monroe Community College for the annual Tour de Cure bike ride, an effort to raise money for diabetes education, research and advocacy.

"We are closing in on 1 million dollars," said frequent Tour de Cure participant and fundraiser Ginny Brandreth. "That makes us [Rochester] one of the top five Tour de Cures in the country," she added.

Many of the cyclists reflected on friends and family with diabetes.

"For me it's personal," said Howard Kravetz, whose 18-year-old son has Type 1 Diabetes. "It's a debilitating disease, but he's serious about taking care of it, and it's something I'm proud of."

Diabetic cyclists participating in the wore special "red racer" jerseys.

15-year-old Noah Myers was one of the many "red racers" participating, and gave a speech prior to one of the cycling start lines.

"There's no other place I'd rather be right now," he said prior to giving his speech. "I'm raising awareness for diabetes and that's just what I want to do."
