Arrest in credit card cloning scheme
Penfield, N.Y. - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrested a Penfield man May 27 for distributing counterfeit credit and debit cards with stolen numbers and using them to purchasing large quantities of gift cards at retail stores in Monroe County and throughout New York state.
Andres A. Vasquez, 29, was taken into custody after a seven-month long investigation by the economics crime unit and the U.S. Secret Service.
Investigators said Vasquez encrypted the stolen card numbers on the back of pre-existing bank cards in order to manufacture "cloned" credit and debit cards.
Vazquez was charged with scheming to defraud, criminal possession of a forgery device and unlawful possession of a personal ID.
He was arraigned in Penfield Town Court and sent to Monroe County Jail without bail.
Deputies said Vasquez had several co-conspirators in the Rochester area and more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
