Update: Man who jumped out of car in custody

Rochester, N.Y. -- Police appear to have taken the man who jumped out of a car in Brighton Thursday morning into custody.

Police set up a roadblock near Midtown Athletic Club and searched a wooded area near Highland Avenue on Interstate 590 for several hours.

Police said the man was just released from a mental health ward at a local hospital and had cuts to his wrists, but was not considered a threat to anyone but himself.

At about 11:30 a.m., after about four hours of searching, the man was spotted by a driver aware of the news.

"They came over, reported having seen an individual with a green shirt and our patrols responded to the area," said Capt. Doug Montijo of the New York State Police. "It was just off 590 here we were able to take the subject into custody.

"It's a great relief. When you're dealing with people that are in emotional distress, mental issues, you're never quite sure what a potential is to harm themselves or others, so it's always a grave concern to close that."
