Governor Cuomo sends letter to President Obama

Albany, N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote a letter to President Obama Monday to request federal major disaster declaration after severe storms and flooding impacted Allegany, Cattaragus, Chatauqua, Delaware, Herkimer, Lewis, Livingston, Ontario, Ostego, Steuben and Yates Counties.

Over 6,500 homes and businesses across 11 counties were without power due to heavy rains and flooding that started May 12, while 130 families dealt with property damage.

I am requesting that President Obama issue a Major Disaster Declaration to help both state and local governments recover from this serious damage inflicted by the flooding and storms to hit communities in central and western New York, Governor Cuomo said in a statement.

A State Disaster Emergency was declared on May 14.
