Colleagues find reason to smile despite loss

Rochester, N.Y. - It's often hard to smile through loss, but Dr. Lloyd Holmes has found reason to, despite the loss of his colleague Mary Nolan.

Because of the memory I have of Mary, I'm doing a lot of smiling because I think about what she brought to the office and I think about the spirit that she had and the spirit she displayed, Dr. Holmes said. I smile a lot thinking about the memories I have of her.

Nolan was killed Saturday night when she fell off a motorcycle on 590.

The driver that night, Dennis Conklin of Williamson drove into a cement barrier and was also hurt.

He now faces vehicular manslaughter and DWI charges.

Nolan worked in the Office of Student Affairs at Monroe Community College with Dr. Holmes.

He says she was the first to welcome him before he accepted a job there.

Holmes said it's her commitment to students he'll never forget.

She was always willing to go above and beyond and she really didn't care what her job description was as long as it benefited the office, as long as it was going to promote the success of the students. That was her priority, student success, said Holmes.

And while Holmes and others who knew Nolan, are mourning her loss.

He knows they can one day smile again, because they had the pleasure to meet her.

She was the type of person that if you were having a down day, you'd come and see Mary, said Holmes. Mary was going to lift your spirits.
