Father speaks out about kid left in car

Rochester Thelma Edwards, the 22-year-old woman accused of leaving her 4-year-old son in a hot car with only the drivers side window cracked for at least two hours is still in the Ontario County jail.

She was arrested almost two weeks ago when someone noticed her 4-year-old son sitting in the car at a parking lot for TGI Fridays in Victor, where Edwards was employed.

Since then, an internet fundraising campaign has raised the $2,000 required to bail her out of prison.

The 4-year-olds father was surprised by the internet campaign.

I was shocked that people would condone stupidity, said Frank Bell, father of the 4-year-old. Hes one of my boys.

Edwards reportedly left the 4-year-old in the car because she claimed to not have anyone available to take him, a notion that Bell said is not true.

You have my mom here, my cousins, my dad, he continued, referencing the people who have watched the 4-year-old in the past. She could have dropped him off.

Bell said that although he understands the seriousness of what Edwards did, he does not believe she should have been sent to jail.

Shes been through a lot, he said. I think she needs help more than anything.

Eight days after she was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment, the 22-year-old appeared in Victor Town Court where a judge denied her request to lower her $2,000 bail and modify the order of protection that bans her from contacting her son for six months.

Its not yet clear when or how the organizer of the fundraising campaign will assist Edwards in getting out of jail.
