Wilson Commencement Park daycare closing

Rochester, N.Y. - A daycare with a mission to help low-income and single parent families in Rochester is closing.

The Early Learning Center at Wilson Commencement Park, in Rochester, will dissolve on August 1st.

The daycare currently has 27 kids enrolled. According to a spokesperson for Wilson Commencement Park, that's not enough to keep the center open, their capacity is 150.

We're told this closure is related to enrollment, but the Park has been faced with deficits in the past. According to tax documents, in 2012 they faced a $182,077 deficit and $321,348 deficit in 2011.

The Wilson Commencement Park sent us this statement from Board Chair Megan Bell:
Wilson Commencement Park confirms that it will be closing our child care facility, the Parks Early Learning Center (ELC), effective August 1.
The closing is a result of significantly reduced enrollment, a phenomenon being faced by day care centers throughout the region. Families are choosing not to utilize child care due to economic concerns, including reduced child care subsidies.
Families with children currently enrolled at Wilson Commencement Parks ELC have several other accredited options, including a day care center directly across the street from the center. We are considering several opportunities for the facility, and anticipate filling the space with other relevant services within the year.
The closing of the ELC will not have any significant impact on our operations. We continue in our mission to connect low-income, single-parent families to comprehensive, quality resources and services so they can develop assets to improve their family stability, increase their economic independence, and strengthen the community.

For parents news of this closing came as a surprise.

I was surprised. I wish someone would have told me ahead of time before we actually started paying, said Davona Brown whose 8-month-old daughter goes to the center. Like I said she has only been there for a couple of weeks. I kind of felt like they knew they were going to close and they probably didn't have a confirmation but you know it is what it is unfortunately.

Brown is currently looking for a new daycare.

They're not helping me find another daycare. They just gave out a letter stating that unfortunately daycare is going to be closing. They didn't offer any assistance; they didn't offer any other option you know daycare is basically closing so you know you might want to find another alternative for your child basically, explained Brown.
