Women survive giant limb through windshield

by Kelsie Smith

Rochester, N.Y. - Kim Vanorden of Ogden was driving home from work Tuesday when a giant limb fell on her truck.

It happened 2:47pm on Glide Street near the corner of Maple Street in the city of Rochester.

"I just heard a crack," said Vanorden. "I turned the wheel, the truck stopped and I had glass shatters all over me."

Vanorden's sister was in the passenger's seat, they both walked away from the accident without a scratch.

"I thought, my mom just passed away not that long ago, and I thought, she was my guardian angel," said Vanorden, who also believes this accident could have been prevented.

Julie Green who lives on the corner where the accident happened said she called 311 to report the damaged limb about 20-minutes before the accident.

"I was directing traffic, telling people that the tree was going to fall down," explained Green. "Trying to prevent what happened and obviously Mother Nature took her course.

The city came to remove the limb that night and what was left of the tree the Wednesday morning.

We spoke with the city's Department of Environmental Services who said they are responsible for the trees between the sidewalk and the road in the city. They say crews maintain the trees regularly. They were not aware of any 311 call that was made about this particular tree.
