Emergency department almost ready
by Cody Combs
Brockport, N.Y. Its a homecoming of sorts for those who used to work at Lakeside Hospital, which closed in 2013, as they prepare for the opening of Strong West Emergency Department.
The University of Rochester Medical Center acquired the building formerly operated by Lakeside and made tentative plans to open 24-7 emergency department.
It now looks like those plans are close to coming to fruition.
At a news conference on Monday, doctors and administrators announced a target date of August 4th to formally open the facility on a 24-7 basis.
The State of New York still has to give regulatory approval, but administrators say they dont anticipate that being a problem.
The ED is expected to have about 100 employees, 50 of which used to work at Lakeside.
Doctors estimate the ED will see approximately 40 patients each day, but cautioned that Strong West will stop just short of being a hospital.
Critically ill and injured patients will likely be sent to nearby hospitals for treatment, although if necessary, they will be stabilized at Strong West before going elsewhere.
A ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the Strong West ED opening is slated for August
