City wants two nightclubs to close

Rochester, N.Y.  The City of Rochester is filing paperwork Tuesday to shut down a nightclub on the East End and will ask another to voluntarily close.

The move comes after a stabbing inside Magic City and a shooting at Captains Attic over the weekend.

Police say Erik Smothers, 36, was stabbed inside Magic City nightclub 2 a.m. Monday morning.

Smothers, of Webster, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.

His injuries are not life threatening.

Matthew Dixon works next door at Cam's Pizzeria and said, "The cops shut us down last night. He told us we all had to leave and get out of here. Usually we stay open till like 4 o'clock."

Shots were also fired across the street from Captain's Attic. Police said no one was hurt, but they did find evidence of the shots fired.

William Grene, owner of the Captain's Attic, said, "The problem is a lot of these issues get blown out of proportion because of the color of my clientele."

It's not the first time owner Grene has had to deal with crime and violence. Just a couple months ago, a man was shot outside the restaurant and bar.

Since January 1, there have been 172 police calls to the business. Grene said only a handful were serious.

"This city is very diverse neighborhood buffing up against each other and we're right on that border." Said Grene.

Kenneth Bowen lives nearby Captain's Attic and said, "It's just a separate sect of people that choose to come in and act a fool. It's not everybody, you shouldn't penalize the establishment for other people acting ignorant it's not their fault."

Just last month, a shooting sent two people to the hospital outside Magic City.

Luis Perez of Santiago Cigar Factory said it's usually the younger group that needs to be watched.

"The cops do a very good job down here when they're here, but the clubs, themselves, and some of the bars need to do a better job of policing themselves," said Perez.
