Greece Olympia basketball coach dies

Greece, N.Y. -- The Section V community is mourning the loss of a longtime coach.

Steve DeRooy, 50, a boys basketball coach at Greece Olympia High School, died Tuesday night.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, DeRooy was leaving Roberts Wesleyan College when he drove across Buffalo Road, into the yard of a home and crashed into a tree.

Deputies say a medical condition caused DeRooy to crash his car.

Derooy was taken by ambulance to Unity Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

DeRooy began his career in Greece in 1984.

He was hired as a physical education teacher in 1995.

DeRooy coached many Greece athletes in a variety of different sports, but is best known for his 29 years with the Olympia boys' basketball program.

Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams said DeRooy touched many lives in his time with the district and will be missed tremendously.

"Steve made significant contributions to Greece students and programs," said Deane-Williams.

"Starting in 2000 he took over the Greece Athlete of the year and just took it to a whole new level I got involved because of Steve and because of George Giordano but I got to know Steve well over the last 14 years, honestly I don't know a better guy personally I don't know a better guy who does more for the community and more for the kids of Greece he is going to be missed. He's a good friend and just devastated by the news," said John DiTulli, a friend and sports talk radio host for WHTK-1280AM.

"A big part of that growth and development was about Steve Derooy and about his leadership and his doing the things behind the scenes and really it was about recognizing kids and recognizing what's good in the Greece community and the athletic community and I think that says a lot about Steve," said Mike Giruzzi, a friend and athletic director at Hilton Central School District.

Counseling will be available for students and staff in need in the Olympia Auditorium from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

Olympia is also planning a remembrance DeRooy at a later a date.
