Grandson charged in fatal fire

by Patrice Walsh

Rochester, N.Y. -- 22 year old Donkish Lesane carried his niece and nephew out of a burning home on Fernwood Avenue Tuesday night. Now he is charged with setting that fire.
His grandmother, 51 year old Winnie Butler was found dead in that home.

We learned in court Thursday that Butler was dead before the fire started. Prosecutors also told the judge Lesane had blood on his shirt when he walked out of the house that night.

His family members shrieked hearing this new evidence in court and seeing the 22 year old in handcuffs. His mother, Lakisha Butler, is also the victims daughter.

She said her son fought with his grandmother but would never hurt her. She believes whatever happened was an accident.

His father, Donnell Lesane said he doesnt know what to believe but doesnt think his son is capable of setting a fire or hurting his grandmother.

Winnie Butler was 51 years old. She was babysitting her grandchildren in the home the night of the fire. Her body was found in a first floor bedroom where the fire started.

Prosecutors are awaiting an autopsy report to determine how Butler died. That could determine what other charges Lesane could face.
