Penn Yan man pleads guilty to extortion charges

Rochester, N.Y. A Penn Yan man pleads guilty to attempting to obtain money from a bank.

U.S. Attorneys office says 21-year-old Jonathan Karcher tried to extort money from the Lyons National Bank in Penn Yan.

Assistant U.S. Attorney says in June of 2013, Karcher called the banks manager and demanded that $15,000 be left by a dumpster near the bank. Karcher allegedly threatened the manager with information about where their children and where they lived.

Karcher could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

His sentencing is scheduled for September 23.
