Solid attendance at LPGA Championship
by Cody Combs
Rochester, N.Y. - Despite it being the beginning of the end for the LPGA Championship being held in Rochester, organizers say ticket sales are strong.
"Our presales were ahead by 30%," said tournament director Linda Hampton. "We're also definitely seeing an increase for our gate ticket sales."
Some had feared a fan backlash and drop in attendance when the LPGA announced it would no longer base its championship tournament in Rochester, but Hampton said the announcement may have had the opposite effect, causing more people to buy tickets.
It's the first year for the tournament being held at the Monroe Golf Club, instead of the traditional location, the Locust Hills Country Club.
Fans seem to be finding their way and enjoying the course.
"It's a credible golf course, a harder course," said Doug Holmgren, who has been going to the tournament for 31 years. "I think it's a great venue and everybody is coming out, just like they did at Locust Hill."
The LPGA Championship tournament concludes on August 17th.
