More Erie County seniors using food stamps

Buffalo, N.Y. (AP) -- More seniors in Buffalo are turning to food stamps.

The Buffalo News reports ( ) that households with people 60 years old or older are the fastest-growing food stamp users in Erie County.

While food stamp usage has leveled off for other families, the number of Erie County households with seniors that receive food stamps increased 61 percent between 2008 and 2012.

In a report published Saturday the newspaper found that many seniors turned to food stamps after the recession hit and they could no longer get by on a fixed income. In many cases, people didn't know they were eligible for the program, known as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

Seventy-eight-year-old Davis Feaster says he relies on food stamps -- and money he gets from returning cans and bottles for the deposit.
