Brockport fire lieutenant facing charges

Brockport, NY  -  A Brockport Fire Department lieutenant is facing mail fraud charges.

Steven Ray was charged on Tuesday.

Federal officials said Ray, a town of Sweden resident, deposited $399,212 in Treasury checks into a personal account and two business accounts.

Investigators said Ray deposited 128 checks,  including Social Security checks and tax refunds.

Investigators said, in February of 2013, a postal worker was robbed at gunpoint in Brooklyn, stealing mail from the carrier.

The checks were allegedly deposited ten days later in Rochester into Ray's account.

Investigators said other checks for people living on the same delivery route ended up in Ray's account, each endorsed by the expected recipient.

Ray appeared in federal court and was released.
