Family addresses daughter's killer

A Utica-area man convicted of fatally beating his girlfriend at The College at Brockport was sentenced Tuesday.

Clayton Whittemore was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Whittemore, 22, was convicted on May 30 of second-degree murder for the brutal beating death of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Alexandra Kogut of New Hartford, Oneida County.

Whittemore killed Kogut inside her dorm early on Sept. 29, 2012.

Kogut's mother, Becky, gave a victim impact statement before sentencing.

Becky was overcome with emotion and had to sit down.

She described dropping her daughter off to college and having a horrible fear she would never see Alexandra again.

Becky recalled texting Alexandra and Clayton on September 29.   Clayton told her Alexandra was sleeping.

Becky said Clayton doesn't deserve to leave prison because she has been robbed as a mother.

Becky said letters Clayton wrote Alexandra over the few months before her death prove he was fighting demons and planned to kill her.

Whittemore spoke briefly at the sentencing, apologizing to Alexandra's family.

Becky Kogut demanded to know what time her daughter died.  She was there when she was born and needed to know when she died.

Whittermore didn't know.
