Heavy rain damages Steuben County Roads

Cohocton, N.Y. - Heavy rain this weekend shutdown multiple roads in Cohocton, Steuben County.

I've lived in this town my whole life and nothing, since the flood of '72 I havent seen anything like this, said Brian Kuhn the town of Cohocton Highway Superintendent while he showed us the damage on Lake Hollow Road.

The shoulder of the road is crumbing, not because water ran over it, but because a creek that runs parallel to it washed out the foundation of the bank.

This is will probably be a three to four week project once Steuben County can come in and help me, said Kuhn.

Cohocton Town Supervisor Jack Zigenfus estimates there is at least $100,000 in damage to town roads.

We have no monies set aside, we have a highway reserve fund which obviously we'll definitely have to tap into, said Zigenfus, and then we never know where we're going to have to go after the money but we'll do it to make the roads right and make it safe for the people."

The town does not own much of the equipment they will need for the larger repairs. They are working with the county and state to bring in the needed equipment.
