Cuomo directs flags to half-staff
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Thursday, August 7, 2014, in honor of U.S. Army Major General Harold Greene, who died on Tuesday in Afghanistan.
"It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Major General Harold Greene," Governor Cuomo said. "We will never forget his sacrifice, and we will honor his service with pride."
On Tuesday, a gunman dressed as an Afghan soldier turned on allied troops at a military university on a base west of Kabul, killing Maj. Greene and wounding about 15 U.S. and coalition forces.
About half of the wounded were Americans, several of them reported to be in serious condition.
Maj. Greene, 34, was the highest-ranked American officer killed in combat in the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
