Canandaigua crash suspect has past clashes with the law

Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Canandaigua man accused of driving drunk and crashing into nine cars had been arrested for drunk driving before.

William Lantier was arrested for drunk driving in 2006 - and has had other criminal dealings with police.

On Wednesday morning - police said he side-swiped several cars and crashed into others.

Nine vehicles were damaged and two people were taken to the hospital before one of the drivers forced him off the road.

At that point - police say Lantier acted violently- using his own vehicle as a battering ram to try to get away.  13WHAM has learned - Lantier's criminal record includes a past charge for violent conduct.

He was arrested for assault and criminal possession of a weapon.  In 2006 he was arrested for DWI- a case that was later pleaded down to driving while impaired.  Lantier was driving with a valid license Wednesday.

In court he pleaded not guilty to DWI, Criminal Mischief, and five counts of leaving the scene of an accident.  Other charges are pending.
