Fire destroys two buildings, cause unknown

Nunda, N.Y. - Two buildings near a popular lumber and hardware store were destroyed by a fire early Saturday morning on State Street.

The buildings are part of the Nunda Lumber and Hardware store and are mostly used for storage.

The main store is still open and operational, but the storage buildings will have to be rebuilt.

It took at least 4 fire fighting units to put the fire out, and witnesses say flames appeared to reach 40 feet in the air. The materials inside the buildings such as tar and insulation created extremely hot flames which made extinguishing the fire difficult.

There were no injuries, but the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dana Russell, owner of the Nunda Lumber and Hardware store told 13WHAM News he believes the cause of the fire appears suspicious.

"They're looking into everything," Russell said, referring to the fire investigators. "There was no power or electricity to that area, no gas...they're looking into other things."

Russell said he will now consider video survelliance cameras as a result of the fires.

Parts of a home near the fire was damaged, as was a truck nearby.

13WHAM will have updates as they are made available as the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
