Local Police Department uses Body Cameras
Gates, N.Y. - The events in Ferguson, Mo. now have some people pushing for police officers to wear body cameras.
These cameras have been worn by the Gates Police Department for the last six years.
The body cameras were introduced to the department by one of their officers looking to capture an accurate account of what happens in the field when things start to go bad.
Over 100,000 people have signed petitions supporting legislation to require body cameras be use by all police officers.
That the Gates Police Chief James Van Brederode says these cameras have worked well for his department. "It [the video] goes to court all the time and it really takes the fight out of the court too because once you see the video either the person did it or they didn't do it," he explained.
In the past the American Civil Liberties Union has said they support this technology, as long as it is comes with a policy that addresses who controls what the cameras record.
The ACLU also wants policies in place to prevent these cameras from becoming a part of mass surveillance of citizens.
