Great White washes up on Long Island beach

Amagansett, N.Y. (AP) -- A scientist says a dead shark that washed up on the beach on Long Island was a great white.

The 4-foot shark was found on the beach at Amagansett on Tuesday.

The carcass was dissected Thursday under the direction of the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service.

Marine scientist Demian Chapman of Stony Brook University assisted with the dissection. He tells Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1rVLXI7 ) that the dead animal was a juvenile great white shark.

Chapman says the dissection "yielded a lot of good information for a variety of scientists."

He says the shark was a male less than 2 years old.

Its cause of death was not known.
