Father: abducted Amish girls doing well

Oswegatchie, N.Y. (AP) -- The father of the two northern New York Amish girls abducted last month says his daughters are sleeping well, eating well and playing.

The father of the 7- and 12-year-old sisters told the Johnson Newspapers the family has been offered mental health counseling services, but at this point he believes his daughters are doing well.

The girls, who authorities say were sexually abused, were released Aug. 14 when their captors were apparently spooked by an intense police investigation and media coverage.

The Associated Press is not naming the family members because it generally does not identify victims of sexual abuse.

Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey were arrested on kidnapping charges. Howells lawyer has not returned calls seeking comment. Vaisey's lawyer says Howells treated her client as a slave.
