Twelve year old Will Thomson turning heads on the golf course
Will Thomson can drive a ball 250 yards. His handicap is zero. Ohone more thing. Hes 12 years old.
Let that sink in for a second. This 12 year old is barely five feet tall and 100 pounds. Yet just last week he shot a 75, from the black tees, on the East Course at Oak Hill.
I started when I was about 3, said Will. My parents took me out on the course and just let me kind of whack balls around and stuff. I didnt know much to do, but I just had fun.
Since then, Wills played plenty of golf. His home courses are Oak Hill and Monroe, while he gets his coaching over at Locust Hill. And its all paid off. Will was the player of the year on the International Junior Golf Tours 14 and under division.
Ill say it again. Hes 12. Something his coach Joe Lusardo sometimes has a hard time believing.
The skys the limit, Lusardi said. He understands his golf swing, and more importantly he understands how to play the game. Ive never seen such an incredible golf IQ from such a young player.
Thomson will turn 13 on September 3rd. He actually shares a birthday with another Pittsford golfer. Someone he looks up to. Gavin Hall.
Hes just such a great kid in general, Will said of Hall. Hes so supportive in anything anybody does. He helps me so much, not even my golf game, just personally.
He and Gavin also share a coach, and that coach sees the similarities.
I started working with Gavin when he was 11, started working with Will when he was 11, and their work ethics are side by side. I never thought Id say that about someone other than Gavin, Id never seen someone with that work ethic, but this kids right on par with him, talent as well.
And who knows? Maybe one day, Will and Gavin will end up in the same place.
I gotta say I hope to be on the PGA tour and be a top player and win PGA tournaments. I have to keep working hard, thats the most important thing.
