How do Rookie QB's Do On Opening Day?

EJ Manuel will be the 13th rookie quarterback to start on opening day in the NFL since the year 2000.  Manuel will no doubt be compared to the Tremendous Trio of 2012 (Luck, RG3 and Russel Wilson) who not only performed like stars, but led their teams in the playoffs.  But 2012 was more of the exception than the rule for starters in the NFL, especially on opening day.  Manuel and fellow AFC East rookie starter Geno Smith will be the 13th and 14th rookies to be the opening day starter since the new milenenium   Here is the good the bad and the ugly from those starts

The Good

Robert Griffin III  (Redskins) 2012  Beat the New Orleans Saints by going 19-26 for 320 yards with 2 touchdowns.

Matt Ryan (Falcons) 2008  Beat the Lions. Ryan threw a 61 yard TD on his first pro pass and went 9-13 for 161 yards and a touchdown

Cam Newton (Panthers) 2011  Set a rookie record by going 24-37 for 422 yards and 2 touchdowns with an interception in a loss to the Cardinals

Mark Sanchez  (Jets) 2009  Beat Houston by going 19-31 for 272 yards with a TD and an interception

The Bad (or at best Average)

Andrew Luck (Colts) 2012  23-45 for 309 yards in a Colts loss to the     Luck had a touchdown but 3 costly interceptions

Russel Wilson (Seahawks) 2012 The surprise Seattle starter went 18-34 for 153 yards with a touchdown and an interception. But his team lost to the Cardinals

Sam Bradford (Rams)  2010  He threw the ball a lot going 32-55 for 253 yards  Brandofrd had his first TD but 3 interceptions as his team lost to the Cardinals

Joe Flacco (Ravens) 2008  In a total game manager role, Flacco went 15-29 for 129 yards While he had no touchdowns he did not throw a pick and the Ravens beat the Bengals

Andy Dalton (Bengals) 2011  Dalton made Flacco look like a gunslinger. The Cincy rookie went 10-15 for 81 yards. But like Flacco he did not throw a pick and beat the Browns

The Ugly

Brandon Weeden (Browns) 2012  Weeden looked overmatched against an awful Eagles defense  He went 12-35 for 118 yards but threw 4 interceptions in a loss to Philly

Ryan Tannehill (Dolphins ) 2011 Tannehill went 20-36 for 219 yards but was picked off 3 times in Miami's loss to the Texans

Matthew Stafford (Lions) 2009  Stafford , the top pick overall, went just 17-37 for 205 yards but threw 3 interceptions in the loss to the Packers
