Lancers lose opener to defending champs, 19-8

The defending MISL champion Baltimore Blast (1-0) defeated the Rochester Lancers (0-1) by a score of 19-8 to spoil Josh Rifes coaching debut. Andrew Hoxie led the Lancers in scoring with two goals and an assist for five points. Patrick Hannigan made 13 saves in goal for the Lancers. The Lancers hope to bounce back next weekend during their home and home with their I-90 rivals in the Syracuse Silver Knights.

The two teams played a possession game during a scoreless first quarter. William Vanzela and Hannigan were both called on to make a couple of tough saves to keep the game tied through fifteen minutes of play.

On Mohawk Mania night, it was appropriate that Elliot Fauske would open the scoring. The Lancers defender dispossessed Vanzela and scored into an empty Blast goal to give the Lancers the opening 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter. Baltimore would take the lead scoring three times in 75 seconds with goals from Marco Mangione, Frederico Moojen, and Lucas Roque.  Joey Tavernese would answer back for the Lancers when he headed home the rebound off aHoxie shot. Baltimore would get goals from Pat Healey and Aduato Neto to close out the first half with Baltimore leading 10-4.

Hoxie would open the second half scoring by taking a pass from 2012-13 MISL leading scorer Doug Miller and putting it into the upper ninety. Mangione would score his second of the game for Baltimore to give the Blast a 12-6 lead after three quarters of play.

Mangione would get the hat trick on a 3-point goal early in the fourth quarter. Mike Deasel would score his first of the game to extend the Baltimore lead.  Hoxie would head home his second of the game with Miller on as the sixth attacker for the Lancers with 3:30 left. Adriano Dos Santos would score on Miller to make the final score 19-8 for the Blast.
