Marrone Needs To Step Up Now

I like Doug Marrone and think he can be the coach to lead this franchise out of the decade and a half  long abyss they have been living in at One Bills Drive.  But the coach needs to do something with this team over the next three weeks to stake that claim. Over the last 3 games, Marrone isn't going to fix the problems of a young, jittery quarterback.  He isn't going to make his offensive line 5 blocks of granite  He isn't going to turn his secondary into shut down corners  But he can do something about having a team fold up like a cheap suit at the slightest hint of adversity  That is how you change the loser mindset that Marrone inherited in Buffalo

I have some real concerns about EJ Manuel's long term ability to be a number one quarterback, but I will maintain it is still too early to know for sure. That being said this franchise needs to go out and get another quarterback to compete with Manuel next year. It could be a rookie, though I would be surprised if they used a first or second round pick. But more likely it's a veteran who needs a new home that at worst could be a very good backup

Stevie Johnson is playing out his final year with the Bills. By no means am I making him the scapegoat of this season of failure.  But when you take at what he brings to the team and what he costs the team, its obvious to me that they will part ways with Stevie at season's end. Please don't recite stats to me about Johnson Yes I know Stevie has put up 1,000 yard seasons  But stats are for the team that lose. He doesn't make big plays in big moments and he doesn't take ownership of his own failings. Add into a high cap number with a big roster bonus and you can see that change happening this off season.

The biggest thing Marrone has to guard against is the tidal wave that losing can create   Take a look at a place like Washington and Houston where it goes from the playoffs to the disaster mode in one year. Those teams have or will change coaches  That isn't going to happen with the Bills.  But jobs need to be on the line now in Buffalo. Players need to know that they can be benched and can be cut if they don't perform.  And no it is a not a good thing to hope that the Bills lose out for the draft. Don't worry about higher draft picks now. Worry about a team that seemed comfortable with losing in Tampa and you will see what they have to change some things now so it can change for the future
