Razorsharks improve to 3-1 under Moten with win over Lake Michigan

The Rochester RazorSharks took advantage of a 15-3 run to start the second half which was just enough to hold off a late surge to defeat the Lake Michigan Admirals 112-106 Saturday afternoon.

Rochester, after struggling from the field in the first half of play, shooting just 36%, trailed the Admirals at halftime by one, 54-53.

RazorSharks Coach Lawrence Moten knew the team had to come out a lot stronger in the second half of play if they were going to get the win. Its got to start off with good energy and I felt like we started the game a little lackadaisical, Moten said. We need to start hitting our free throws and taking good shots in the second half.

Rochesters Aaron Williams did exactly that in the third quarter making a lay-up down low followed by a mid-range jumper to give the RazorSharks a 57-54 lead.

After the Admirals cut the lead to one, forward Dane Miller gave the RazorSharks the energy they needed with a bucket and the foul completing a three point play. After the play, Miller pumping his fist, got the home crowd excited.

After the game Miller wanted to take it upon himself to get the team fired up. In the third quarter I wanted to attack any chance that I got, Miller said. Whether it was off an offensive rebound or pushing the ball up ahead just trying to make a play.

The Admirals Courtney Blackmore knocked down a deep three to end the run making it 79-71 Rochester with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter. To close out the third, RazorSharks Rob Diggs blocked a Lake Michigan shot and on the offensive end completed a three point play giving Rochester an 11 point lead 89-78 after three quarters of play.

The RazorSharks would have their largest lead of the game 102-84 after going on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. The Admirals didnt quit despite the 18 point deficit as Blackmore led the charge nailing back to back threes. This started a 17-2 run with Eladio Espinosa finishing the drive with a ferocious slam dunk and the foul for a three point play. This cut Rochesters lead to three, 104-101.

Admirals Coach Jon Solomon after the game wanted more of that effort out of his guys throughout the whole game instead of just at the end.

No matter what level you play at you have to make solid fundamental plays, Solomon said. At times we did and showed a high level of intensity but guys just have to learn to work harder.

Despite losing momentum down the stretch the RazorSharks were able to go 8-8 from the line in the final two minutes to hold onto the lead.

The RazorSharks had six players in double figures led by Miller who had a game high 21 points followed by Williams with 18 and Reggie Stallings contributed with 17.

The Admirals were led by Blackmore with 16 points, followed by Odgra Bobo and Kenny Brown who tallied 14 points respectively.

With the victory the RazorSharks improve to 3-1 on the season while Lake Michigan dropped to 0-2.
