Wings drop third straight in Norfolk
The Red Wings road woes continued Saturday night as they dropped their 6th straight game away from Frontier Field falling 4-2 to the Norfolk Tides from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA.
Rochester (54-47) has lost the first three games of this series and eight of their last 10 overall. The Wings - who are three games in to a 24-game stretch in which they play 18 road games – are just 20-29 away from the friendly confines of Frontier Field.
For whatever reason, it has been the offense which has struggled most on the road. After collecting just seven hits (six singles) and two runs on Saturday, the Wings are hitting just .247 on the road this season and averaging only 3.7 runs/game. For comparison, the Wings are hitting .289 and scoring over 5.0 runs/game at home.
In a 1-0 game, the Tides broke it open in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Wings reliever A.J. Achter walked home a run before allowing a two-run single to Christian Walker that put the Tides in front 4-0.
The Red Wings’ battled back in the eighth after back-to-back singles from Daniel Ortiz and Chris Rahl put two Wings on base in the same inning for the first time all game. After Nate Hanson struck out and Doug Bernier lined out to third, James Beresford drove a two-run double to the left-center field gap off side-winding lefty Clay Rapada to cut the lead in half.
The double snapped a Red Wings 0-for-18 spell with runners in scoring position in the series.
Beresford, who finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, now has picked up multiple hits in four straight games and is hitting .328 (19-for-58) over his last 14 games overall.
Eric Farris singled to lead off the ninth but was erased on a 5-4-3 double play ball off the bat of Dan Rohlfing. Evan Meek then got Wilkin Ramirez to strike out swinging for the final out sealing the series victory for the Tides.
Trevor May, who missed nearly a month with a right calf injury, made his first start back with the Wings on Saturday and went three innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk. After allowing the first three batters of the game to reach, May retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.
May’s counterpart, RHP Suk-min Yoon, was making his first start in almost a month as well. Yoon threw 3 1/3 scoreless frames before giving way to southpaw Nick Additon – who picked up the win by tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings as well.
The Wings wrap up their four-game set in Norfolk on Sunday evening with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch. Southpaw Logan Darnell (4-5, 3.48) will make his first start of the second-half for the Wings.
