Syracuse survives scare against Villanova in Double OT, 27-26
Losing your home opener to an FCS opponent would not be a good way to start your second season in the ACC. While it may not have been pretty, the Syracuse Orange avoided a colossal upset in their season opener, stopping Villanova on a game-winning two-point conversion attempt in double overtime to survive the scare 27-26.
Rush Henrietta product Ashton Broyld hauled in 5 catches for 57 yards, but most of his damage came in the first half before quarterback Terrel Hunt was ejected. Hunt was tossed in the second quarter after punching a Villanova defender in the head while the two were tangled up on the ground following a play.
Hunt finished 10-17 for 94 yards. His backup, Austin Wilson, played well, finishing 11-17 for 89 yards.
Prince Tyson Gulley paced the offense with 11 carries for 100 yards. His 65 yard touchdown run got the scoring started for the Orange in the first quarter.
Syracuse, who improved to 1-0 this season, will travel to Central Michigan on Saturday, September 13. The Orange have next week off.
