Rochester, N.Y. - The month of May is Foster Care Awareness Month.
Local organization The Hub585 is on a mission to educate and help support families.
Dr. Ashley Cross is the founder and executive director of The Hub585. She's a third-generation foster parent.
Dr. Cross says there are a number of challenges families face with the foster care system.
According to The Hub585, one in five foster children will become homeless as they age out of the foster care system. Only 58% will graduate high school by age 19.
Dr. Cross also points to challenges trying to retain foster families. That's why her agency provides mentors and various programs to offer support.
This week, Dr. Cross elaborates on those programs. Annette Campbell, a foster alumni, shares her story of perseverance and how she now gives back to foster families.
