Saving money thanks to "Hobbit Home"
Plattsburgh, N.Y. – A New York man is saving big bucks – living mortgage-free thanks to his “Hobbit Home.”
Rob Roy built the home using a cordwood masonry style. That’s when logs are stacked transversely and bound together with cement-based mortar.
Roy and his wife, Jaki, have no mortgage or water bill. They save on their energy bill thanks to solar power and golf car batteries. $500 worth of firewood will heat the house all year.
“I always say a dollar saved is worth so much more than a dollar earned, because we have to earn so many dollars to save so precious few.” said Rob. “That’s my philosophy.”
He says these kinds of homes are durable and should last at least 100 years.
