Man who saw assault in Irondequoit bar asks others to step forward with information
Irondequoit, N.Y. (13WHAM) - One day after a man was beaten unconscious in Rookie's Bar on East Ridge Road in Irondequoit, a witness to the incident is asking others who were in the bar to tell police what happened.
A witness to the incident who describes himself as a regular at the bar says Friday night was like many other nights at the bar.
Per the witness's request, we are not identifying him by name.
"Everybody was having fun and it turned sideways real quick, there was no yelling, no arguing, there was no way to know anything was going to happen it just happened," said the witness. "It went from everybody having fun to a man lying on the floor in serious condition."
The witness says the victim, Nicolas Childs, was well-known around the bar. However, he says the man he saw commit the crime was not.
"There was no reason to get involved, they were playing pool and this guy took a pool stick and just hit him," said the witness. "As far as I'm aware of, there was no reason for the altercation to happen at all."
Police tell 13WHAM, Childs is still in guarded condition at Strong. They've been unable to speak to Childs yet due to his condition, but they expect him to survive.
The witness says the man responsible for the crime didn't come to the bar alone. As police investigate, he's pleading for those at the bar during the incident to come forward.
"Nobody deserves this, nobody. The fact that people won't say anything is quite shameful," said the witness. "Anybody who has friends, if your friend's in a situation similar to this victim, I would hope somebody would reach out to try and help you out."
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 423-9300.
