The 13WHAM News Pirate Toy Fund's annual toy drive kicked off Monday.

13WHAM is happy to team up with Gary the Happy Pirate and the Pirate Toy Fund Collection Drive this year.

All week, you can donate new, unwrapped toys to area malls, the Strong Museum and Wegmans. This year's goal is to collect 20,000 toys.

At the museum, you can drop off toys at the collection "treasure chest" outside of the gift shop. Toys are collected weekly and taken to the Pirate Toy Fund warehouse to later be given out to the kids.

The Pirate Toy Fund all started with the need for toys for kids in the hospital, and the sweet gesture of Christine Simonetti.

Now, more than 20 years later, the pirate toy fund is helping tens of thousands of kids in the Rochester area every year through nearly 70 organizations. One of those organizations is Victim's Assistance, which needs to have enough toys to help the 450 kids they see every year.

Throughout the years, 250,000 toys have been donated and handed out to children in the Rochester area.
