A Middlesex man was killed Friday night in a snowmobile accident in the Adirondack Park.

Thomas Hetherington, 46, was riding with others when the accident occurred in the Town of Inlet, just outside of Raquette Lake, according to Inlet Police Chief Ronald W. Johnston.

Hetherington, an assistant fire chief at Middlesex Fire Department in Yates County, missed a curve and hit a tree just after 8 p.m. His best friend, who was riding behind him and also crashed, tried to resuscitate Hetherington, Johnston said, but he was pronounced dead by officials.

Icy trail conditions and speed appear to be the cause, Johnston said.

Hetherington was a past chief at Churchville Fire Department. He also worked as a fire instructor.
