Carriage house burns down near Sonnenberg Gardens
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WHAM)- A fire broke out late Monday night at a carriage house in Canandaigua in the area of Wood and Gibson Streets.
The building was located in the middle of multiple homes just a couple blocks away from Sonnenberg Gardens. The first calls for the fire came in around 11:10 p.m.
First responders were able to contain the fire to the barn, despite its being in the middle of multiple homes. They say it was where the flames couldn't spread.
The roof collapsed before crews arrived on scene. Once on scene, firefighters were able to put out the bulk of the fire in about 20 minutes. Hot spots took about three hours to fully extinguish.
The house was a total loss.
There were no injuries in the fire and it is not considered suspicious.
The cause of the fire is unclear.
Neighbors told 13WHAM they heard some explosions during the fire, which crews attributed to gas cans, paint cans and aerosols inside the house.
According to Canandaigua Fire Chief Frank Magnera, the two-story house was built in the late 1800s.
